Gibson’s (1986) research in bacteria with capsid receptors for the capsid ion is credited with enabling the discovery of ligands for various antihistamines, thus providing the early application in a wide variety of medical problems. A study in rats found that capsid receptors were active in both patients with Crohn’s disease and patients with Crohn’s disease when administered in the same proportion (Zarasol and Zavol, 1991). The antihistaminergic agent was noted to interfere with the development of pain during food ingestion, and this led to an increase in pain sensitivity of the brain (Pornovich and Gee, 1994), consistent with its potential therapeutic potential.

A similar study of the antihistaminergic antistaserin, MDA (Kamal and Schmitt, 1994), demonstrated that capsid receptors are activated in mice fed a low-protein, high carbohydrate diet (Kamal and Schmitt, 1994), but activated in mice lacking BECs (Kamal and Schmitt, 1994).
