No sooner had the new Hyundai Elantra become familiar on Ukrainian roads than a facelift model came to replace it! Although, judging by the first look at the updated sedan, the matter was not done with cosmetic changes alone. Let’s see how serious it is!
In general, such rapid lineup updates for the Korean Hyundai are no longer a curiosity – not so long ago, the same replacement was carried out with the older Sonata sedan. They say they didn’t like the design … What is “wrong” in this case is still unknown, but the fact is that already three years after the debut, Elantra was seriously updated.
And these updates are noticeable not only with the naked eye, but in the truest sense of the word a mile away! The front and rear of the Elantra were completely redrawn, and at the same time, her style was seriously updated. If earlier it was smooth lines and contours, now the same lighting equipment seems to be cut out by a laser beam, it has such chiseled and regular lines. This is emphasized by L-shaped running lights. By the way, the optics itself in the test Hyundai Elantra is beautiful, fully LED Dual LED. But only the top-end Premium package can boast of this.
They also made the radiator grille larger, added textures to the front bumper, and the foglight block is now triangular. And here it should be noted that all these design solutions and frills are best seen on a white car, and in black they are very lost. I also note that the rims go well with the new style, although I don’t often pay attention to such nuances – the pattern of the rims is a matter of taste.
The stern also received new optics with pointed ends, a blank trunk lid and also a new bumper. The stamping for the number is now located on it, and on the cover itself there is a large inscription of the model and a rear-view camera is located. From this angle, the view is better, and it should get dirty less.
And in the rear bumper you can see a slight hint of a diffuser, only in this case it is here for beauty – our Elantra has a regular atmospheric 1.6 engine. So, a brief summary: globally, the body has remained the same, but has noticeably changed in appearance. These changes affected only the overall length, which increased to 4620 mm. And the height, width, and of course the wheelbase remained unchanged.
The designers and developers did not stop at the exterior, but they were already working more carefully with the change in the interior. The new steering wheel is the first thing you notice when you sit in the Elantra’s driver’s seat. It is borrowed from the i30 hatchback and pleases with a comfortable grip and a logical organization of the buttons on the spokes. And in cold weather, it is also heated. Moreover, this warming option is available in all trim levels, except for the basic one.
In total, there are four equipment levels: Active, Comfort, Style and Premium. Basic, for 456.100 UAH. ($17.500 at the current exchange rate), it will be completely empty, and our test one will be the most equipped for 612.300 UAH. ($23.500). For the difference in cost, you get, among other things, side airbags and curtains, a stabilization system, alloy 16th wheels, parking sensors in a circle, cruise control, keyless entry, heated rear seats, a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen and even wireless charging for smartphone. However, you will have to pay extra for a leather interior separately – plus $ 1,200. In fact, this is the only option for an additional fee, otherwise the configurations are (as before) fixed. Although there is one more, and it is surprising. so-called. Safety Pack, which includes ESC, side airbags and curtain airbags and an anti-rollback system (this is to prevent the car from rolling backwards on a hill when you release the brake). For our version, this is a standard, but for Style it is already for a surcharge of $ 970, and for Comfort and Active it is not available in principle! A car for 17 thousand dollars without a stabilization system in our time is already too much. Even in the most affordable (read cheap) foreign car for less than 10 thousand – we are now talking about Renault Sandero in the database – it is! Not bad from ergonomics. The main factor here is the simplicity and convenience of the button layout. The center console is slightly turned towards the driver, and the most important buttons of the multimedia system with a 7-inch color screen, for example, are duplicated by physical ones. The dual-zone climate control unit is a combination of buttons and knobs, which is also convenient. The shelf under it was reorganized and now there is a convenient place for a smartphone (only in the top configuration), and all the necessary ports are nearby. That’s true, progress has not reached the central tunnel – the handbrake is still mechanical. Yes, and many modern options that appear on classmates or even on cars of a younger class are not here. So, there is a heated rear sofa (even a two-stage one), but there is no windshield heating. Like there is no adaptive cruise control or GPS navigation (but it does support Android Auto and Apple Car Play).
The front seats are comfortable, good lateral support, perforated leather and even electric adjustments in the driver’s seat. It’s also not bad with space, but not in all respects – the rear seats are not cramped for legs, but riders above 1.82 will have a low ceiling. But in addition to the mentioned heating, there are also air deflectors. Trunk volume remained the same, 458 liters. The back of the sofa is folded in parts in a ratio of 40 to 60.
But in terms of technology in the test Hyundai Elantra, no revelations awaited me. Under the hood, there is a 1.6 MPi atmospheric gasoline engine with distributed injection and a power of 127 hp. The torque was only slightly corrected – 155 N / m are now achieved at slightly higher speeds – at 4850. All this is fully felt in practice. In order for the sedan to move, the engine must be turned. A classic of the atmospheric genre, I would say! But the ardor of an avid driver can very quickly cool fuel consumption. During our test, Elantra distinguished itself with a valiant appetite, consuming an average of 9-10 liters per “hundred”. Moreover, in traffic jams and congestion, the engine did not stop “on the laurels” and the figure could still grow. The minimum weekend that I managed to get is 8.5 liters. Yes, the Elantra fits into the declared performance characteristics, because the number 9.6 is indicated there, but still a bit too much!
But if the consumption figures don’t bother you much, then our version has several driving modes, and one of them is Sport. Not to say that the character of the car changes a lot, but the sedan comes to life a little and more readily responds to the actions of the gas pedal. In traffic jams, the Eco mode proved to be excellent, with it it is more convenient to “crawl” meter by meter, and for normal driving, just the Normal mode is suitable.
The six-speed automatic transmission is perhaps the only node that did not raise any questions. Smooth operation, timely shifts – what more could you want for a C-class sedan? Sometimes, perhaps, paddle shifters, because the Elantra steers easily and pleasantly, and the suspension keeps it well in turns. It also handles bumps and bumps well. No, she is not omnivorous, but she works out elastically and quietly, while there is a lot of reserve in terms of energy intensity. And the landing of the body is not low. therefore, you can drive up to ordinary curbs without fear of scratching the front bumper. Therefore, in general, the impression was that Hyundai Elantra is not afraid of our roads.
